Tragedy leaving us with a Smile: Heath Ledger

We mourn the death of Heath Ledger, the 28 year old Australian actor who was found dead Tuesday, January 22nd 2008 in his Manhattan apartment by his message therapist. The cause of death is still under investigation but was assumed to be an accidental drug overdose due to the amount of pills he had in his room.

One would recognize this amazing young actor from such films as 10 Thing I Hate about You, The Patriot, Broke back Mountain, and The Dark Knight which Ledger had just finished filming a month prior to his death. Ledger’s final role was as Batman’s nemesis “the joker” which in a strange way, allows him to leave us with a smile.

The Academy Award Nominee was once engaged to actress Matilda Rose whom he had met on the set of Broke Back Mountain. The couple has since split but had a daughter, Matilda Rose, who was born on October 28, 2005 in New York City and will unfortunately grow up mourning the loss of her father at the age of two. Most where sickened by the media abundant coverage of the actor’s unexpected death and paparazzi for refusing to let the family mourn in peace.

Ledgers death was noticed by the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards for Hollywood’s A-list where many fellow actors and friends of Heath wore black ribbons and gowns in memory. The ceremony was originally supposed to be that of a happy one celebrating the end of the three month writers strike but unfortunately the tragic loss set the mood of the award show.

When tragedies like this happen, at such young ages, it is hard to mourn with the thought of what could have been. Heath Ledger was noticeably an amazing actor, a father, and a great person and friend would have likely been one of the great actors of our time. Like tragedies before, Lennon, Kennedy, King, we wonder what great things these individuals would have accomplished had circumstances been different. It is important to appreciate the great people we have among us and to give merit to those who do good for the world.

Heath, you will be missed.
