5 Cool Tips on how to manage your holiday cravings

Mondays! Monday’s always haven’t done it for me. Even less freezing rain Mondays! Damn. If only spring break was now. But, it’s not and so the story begins. Plus it’s the holidays - all the good Christmas stuff but here’s the bad part - the sweets, the goodies, the candies and the eggnog! Arrgh - they’re everywhere!

And so, with the goodness of my heart, I’d like to give you all 5 cool tips on how to manage your holiday cravings :

1. Eat a good Breakfast: Beat those cravings with a good high quality protein breakfast. This will get your metabolism cracking and you’ll burn more calories all day long and manage your cravings.

2. Eat Often: After a good breakfast, snack every 3 to 4 hours will also help to keep you on track, energized and satisfied. I like the Kashi snack bars myself.

3. Dont overeat : Yeah, I tell you to eat often in point 2 and then tell you not to overeat. Well, slick, it’s worth the extra point. don’t be greedy. Eat just enough to stay satisfied - right now, with exams and papers and finals, it’s easy to get stressed and start eating to combat the stress. Exercise some control, old chap!

4. De-Stress Yourself: Here are some ways to cope with stress - go for a walk, hit the gym, run around the track, talk to friends…all these activities stimulate neurochemicals that activate regions of the brain that stimulate positive emotions associated with eating something sweet. One reason for winter weight gain is that we start eating more and exercising less. So, be aware of your schedule and fit in a de-stress activity.

5. Finally…Did you know…..a craving can only last for 15 minutes - then it goes away?

List somethings that you can do to distract yourself for 15 minutes. When a craving hits, call a friend - chat with him/her, do some sort of exercise or just drink some water pronto. Once 15 minutes are over, you’ll be happy to see that your cravings have vanished.

Well, those were some friendly tips on how to manage your winter cravings. Stay tuned for some up-to-date news on my success (or failure) on how I’ve managed my cravings.
